内容説明

This biography offers the reader, not the bearded prophet with baleful eye, but a likeable Lawrence: a hilarious mimic; an inspired teacher; a brilliant journalist; an ecological visionary; and above all - as he saw himself - a married man. Maddox examines Lawrence's restless life through the greatest contradiction in it, his marriage, taking it not as just another aspect of Lawrence but as the encompassing whole. His marriage to the Baroness Frieda von Richtoven Weekley was a mismatch made in heaven, and yet it lasted until Lawrence died at the age of 43, when she claimed he told her: "nothing has mattered but you". Drawing on material recently uncovered, the author faces all of the charges thrown against Lawrence: misogyny, racism, pornography, repressed homosexuality, ingratitude, miserliness, and finds him guilty, but not as charged. She reveals Lawrence's recorded admission that he was looking for bisexual lovers for himself, and through photographs, proves that the beautiful Rosalind Raynes was the main model for Lady Chatterley.
