As the field of substance abuse counseling matures, the need for clinical supervisory training designed specifically for substance abuse counselors has become more urgent. Greater accountability - financial, ethical, and legal - necessitates a higher standard of professionalism. Counselor certification requirements encompass a growing body of skills, and such credentialing is even more important for supervisors. In this groundbreaking book. David J. Powell, a leading trainer of substance abuse counselors for the past decade and a half, outlines the knowledge base and core competencies that substance abuse supervisors will need in the coming years. The models of supervision typically relied on in substance abuse counseling are taken from established schools of therapy, utilizing developmental, psychodynamic, skills, and family therapy perspectives. The substance abuse field, which draws on all of these traditions, requires a model of supervision that synthesizes all these into a coherent whole even as it faithfully reflects the principles and practices specific to alcohol and drug abuse counseling. To meet this need, Powell has designed such a comprehensive, "blended" model, and here he offers easy-to-follow guidelines for its use with substance abuse counselors. From his new model Powell offers methods of supervisory contracting, observation, case presentation, modeling, feedback, intervention, and evaluation. He addresses ethical and legal concerns in the day-to-day contexts in which they can arise. Learning objectives and a variety of assessment instruments are also provided. Firmly grounded in both theory and practice, Powell's authoritative text will become the standard text for thetraining and education of supervisors in substance abuse counseling.
