From the very beginning, the legendary rise of the Rothschild family from the confines of the Jewish quarter in Frankfurt to the dizzy heights of financiers to the countries of Europe has been a source of fascination and admiration, but has also been presented as a mystery by unsympathetic critics. The Rothschilds and their wealth are thus shrouded in legends, which have done more to obscure the history of the family than shed light on it. "The Rothschilds: Esasys on the History of a European Family" offers a set of scholarly essays on the family as bankers, financiers and patrons, whether of literature, the arts, or of Jewish causes.
