内容説明

In the century of its publication Don Quixotewas soon translated into other European languages, and within a few decades it had inspired writers in France and England as well as in the Spanish world at home and overseas. The work of the early English novelists and of Romantics in various countries combined to make Don Quixote required reading in the heyday of nineteenth-century Realism. Essays in this volume cover the influence of Cervantes and in particular, Don Quixote, on modern Spanish American writers such as Borges, Alejo Carpentier, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Guiraldes and Fuentes, and on such Spaniards as Goytisolo, while other contributors range further afield and stress the fascination felt for Cervantes's major novel by Nabokov, Thomas Mann, Proust and other major novelists. A suggested theory of literary influence and an overview of cross-media influence complete the volume. Contributors: EDWIN WILLIAMSON, NICHOLAS G. ROUND, MICHAEL WOOD, PAUL JULIAN SMITH, EDWARDS J. HUGHES, E.C. RILEY, MICHAEL BELL, EDWIN WILLIAMSON, PHILIP SWANSON, DIETRICH SCHEUNEMANN.
