This title provides an introduction to public policy and planning in the broad field of leisure. The book includes theoretical perspectives and practical guidelines for the application of a range of analytical techniques, such as planning techniques, demand forecasting and performance appraisal. Original case studies are used to illustrate particular issues and examples of analytical techniques. The contents include: the role of government in leisure from a variety of ideological and theoretical viewpoints; the idea of leisure as a human right and as a need; leisure organizations and strategic management and decision-making; leisure plans and strategies; leisure planning methods and approaches; projects appraisal; leisure demand estimating and forecasting; cost-benefit analysis and economic impact analysis; performance appraisal. The book concludes with a consideration of policy and planning in particular leisure sectors, including arts and entertainment, sport, tourism, children's play, outdoor recreation and hallmark events; and in relation to particular social groups, including children, youth, women, the family, the elderly, people with disabilities and ethnic groups.
It is suitable for both students and practitioners.
