Description
This, the first volume in the Research in Applied Linguistics series, focuses on the sociocultural and linguistic aspects of English in India. The articles discuss several important issues involving the interaction of linguistic theory, sociolinguistics and applied linguistics. Themes explored include: the role and place of English in India after independence; the emergence of indigenized varieties of English; phonological, lexical, syntactic, semantic and pragmatic aspects of Indian English; appropriate curriculum design and pedagogical practices; and the role of attitudes, motivation and stereotypes in learning English as a second language in India.
