Description

This book brings together some of the most important and influential recent articles on policy and practices in bilingual education around the world, with particular emphasis on the United States. It complements and extends Foundations of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism by Colin Baker. The readings have been divided into four sections: Section 1. Policy and Legislation on Bilingualism in Schools and Bilingual Education. Section 2. Implementation of Bilingual Policy in Schools: Structuring Schools. Section 3. Using Bilingualism in Instruction: Structuring Classrooms. Section 4. Using the Bilingualism of the School Community: Teachers and Parents. The book can be used as a comprehensive introduction for instructors, researchers and students, and as an interactive text for students. In designing the text, the authors have been particularly attentive to the needs in teacher education, especially in the preparation of bilingual teachers. Thus, each of the readings is followed by questions and activities that engage students in reflection and practices that may transform their own thinking, as well as the schools, classrooms and communities to which they will contribute. Whenever possible, the questions and activities reflect the content of the readings, and ask students to practice among themselves processes that will enable a contribution to their own communities and schools.
