内容説明

During the past few decades, there has been an explosive increase of knowledge in disciplines related to children's cancer. New disease entities, new diagnostic methods, and novel therapeutic modalities have been introduced. These clinical advances are largely based on new insights into the pathophysiology of neoplastic diseases that have been gained by applying the tools of biology, cytology, biochemistry, immunology and molecular genetics. The development of monoclonal antibody technology has resulted in a more precise classification of malignant neoplasms and opened new frontiers in tumor biology and immunotherapy. Advances in supportive care have reduced the adverse side-effects of intensive cancer therapy. Analysis of data compiled by the multi-institutional collaborative study groups has expanded our understanding of the natural history of cancer in children. The paediatric oncologist can now tailor therapy to the individual child on the basis of the patients age, tumor histology, state of disease, and a variety of other prognostic parameters. The steady increases in the long term survival of children with cancer have spawned an area of cautious optimism. This book presents all aspects of paediatric neoplastic diseases, covering a broad range of clinical and biological manifestations and treatment. It focuses on the practical needs of the clinician as well as on the frontiers of clinical and basic research.
