Desmond Nuttal died on October 24th, 1993. For over 25 years he had been an outstanding figure on the world stage of educational research and in many ways his contribution to the UK educational system was unrivalled. Contained within this book is a selection of Desmond Nuttall's classic articles about educational assessment, examination, educational indicators, school effectiveness and the improvement of education. These were written at different points of his career in education research, management and leadership, and together they put forward a powerful set of statements - vital additions to the educational debate of the 1990s. The two authors of the book knew Desmond Nuttall well, and worked with him on particular projects. They introduce each article and set it within the context in which it was written. They also summarise the major themes within Nuttall's work, and consider their relevance for current debate about educational assessment, the curriculum and school effectiveness.
