In 1994 the world's largest integrated market was formed: the European Economic Area. It stretches from the Arctic to the Mediterranean and embraces more than 370 million consumers. The retail trade in each of the 17 member countries must now respond to the challenges of an enlarged market and increased competition. This publication aims to help and is designed as a supplement to the earlier publication "Retailing in the European Single Market 1993". It provides information for retailers and wholesalers wanting to consolidate and strengthen their position; managing directors in consumer goods industries keen on identifying the best distribution channels; and trade associations and chambers of commerce.
