Description and Table of Contents

Description

This proceedings provides a summary of progress, and sets out future research directions for optical computing. At the meeting, supported by the International Commission for Optics, over 250 researchers from academic institutions and industry met to discuss and review the latest developments in optical computing, optics in computing and directly related areas. Optical computing is a relatively new and topical field, and the subject of current intense research effort. New devices are constantly being produced. Rapid progress is currently being made in "smart-pixel" technologies, fuelled by advances in semiconductor growth and device fabrication techniques. Proceedings, technical digests, and review papers in diverse journals, provide the best source for keeping up to date with developments. This is a comprehensive record of current developments in the field. It will provide an invaluable reference for researchers working on aspects of optical computing.

Table of Contents

Digital optical processors: algorithms, architectures and implementations. Optical interconnects and switching networks: optical techniques. Analogue optical processing. Neural networks. Array devices: sources, smart-pixels and spatial light modulators. Optical storage and switches: guided wave techniques.
