内容説明

This text is part of a three-volume set which aims to provide the most complete and scholarly study of the Reformation to date. Based on original sources and specialized secondary literature, it is intended to give a detailed and balanced assessment of the era. This volume covers the period up to the schism under Henry VIII and the heresy of the Royal Supremacy. It examines the domestic and foreign policy problems endemic in England in 1517 and considers the numerous individual revolutions transforming daily life. Parliamentary history; administrative history; ecclesiastical history; personal histories, and international relations are all analyzed carefully and placed in context. Particular emphasis is given to the passionate debate which surrounded the new theological ideas and accompanying government propaganda in support of its newly created National Church. Volume II describes the turbulent history of the Church of England as reorganized by Henry VIII, and analyzes the impact that this had on both government and the nation. It examines the reigns of Edward VI and Mary I, and offers a critique of the "Book of Martyrs". The concluding volume considers the re-emergence of Protestantism in Elizabeth I's reign, focusing on the repressive penal acts and regulations of 1559 and the fate of those of both religious persuasions who refused to conform.
