内容説明

This text is part of a three-volume set which aims to provide the most complete and scholarly study of the subject to date. Based on original sources and specialized secondary literature, it is intended to give a detailed and balanced assessment of the Reformation. Volume II describes the turbulent history of the Church of England as reorganized by Henry VIII, and analyzes the impact that this had on both government and the nation. Henry's death in 1547 led to the minority of Edward VI and the rigid imposition of the new beliefs. Hughes considers carefully liturgical innovations such as the "Book of Common Prayer", the proposed code of Canon Law, and the general political situation. With the accession of Mary I rigorous efforts are made to restore Catholicism against a never-ending background of international pressures, political intrigue and outright opposition. The horrors of the reign are presented in full, and Hughes concludes by offering a critique of the "Book of Martyrs". Volume I covers the period up to the schism under Henry VIII and the heresy of the Royal Supremacy. It examines the domestic and foreign policy problems endemic in England in 1517 and considers the numerous individual revolutions transforming daily life. The concluding volume considers the re-emergence of Protestantism in Elizabeth I's reign, focusing on the repressive penal acts and regulations of 1559 and the fate of those of both religious persuasions who refused to conform.
