This work is a comprehensive source of reference, giving useful and practical information on the most readily available commercial woods. The book gives advice on the characteristics, uses and workability of 21 softwoods and 56 hardwoods. Each wood is individually photographed to show both side and end grain. In addition, a sample of each wood is shown, actual size, before and after the application of a clear finish, revealing how the wood colour changes. Choosing the right wood for specific projects involves a lot more than knowing what it looks like. Solutions to many problems are offered in this handy book, including the option of man-made boards and veneers if solid wood is inappropriate for the job. In keeping with current concern on the environment, the book includes an important guide to endangered species. The authors have made many television appearances, and have presented two BBC series of their own on furniture making and renovation. They are the authors of the "Collins Complete Woodworker's Manual" and "Collins Complete DIY Manual".
