In this work, Jean Deloche traces the origins, development and operation of India's transport and communication system before the era of steam locomotion. This volume (the first of two) is devoted to land transport. The author traces the history of ancient roads across the subcontinent, in various geographical areas from the Himalayas down to South India. The second part looks at all aspects of road construction and the third part examines various means of transport. The detailed descriptions are based on data drawn from a varied number of sources, covering a time period from the early Vedic to the 19th century.
