Atrial fibrillation is the most commonly encountered sustained arrhythmia in medical practice. It can occur in virtually all structural cardiac abnormalities. Atrial fibrillation is not an acutely life-threatening arrhythmia but is presence is associated with significant long term morbidity, including heart failure and stroke, and increased mortality. This book is a summary of the proceedings of a conference sponsored by American Heart Association. In recent years, investigators from many disciplines have shown a rekindled interest in the study of atrial fibrillation. This book draws upon experts in the fields of cardiology, epidemiology, neurology, pediatrics, and basic science to present the latest information on the mechanisms and pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatment therapies for atrial fibrillation.
