The paint and surface coatings industry is under sustained pressure to reduce or eliminate volatile organic compounds (VOCs), along with the coalescing solvents and glycol-based freeze-thaw stabilisers commonly used in emulsion paints. This pressure has resulted in a shift from solvent- to water-based coatings that possess high performance film-forming qualities without environmental risk. Waterborne Coatings and Additives outlines the most recent developments in the use of film-forming resins such as alkyds, epoxies, polyesters and polyurethanes, and their application in metal, concrete and textile treatment. It also looks in detail at the role of biocides and foam control agents, acetylenic and polymeric surfactants, clay rheology modifiers, driers and metallic pigments in the manufacture and formulation of aqueous systems. It shows how anti-pollution legislation has influenced recent practice.
