Throughout the book, theories, concepts, and models are grounded by application to real-world examples. Specifically, comparsions are made among four cases: Middle Atlantic Bight, the Louisiana Shelf, the shelf off southeastern Australia, and the epicontinental shelf of the Gulf of Bohai, China.
