内容説明

The inaugural volume of Advances in Developmental Biochemistry paints a rather broad stroke through the field. Gene expression during animal development is a major, but not exclusive topic of the volume, and several experimental systems, including mice, flies, worms, and amphibia, are considered.

DNA Replication and the Role of Transcriptional Elements During Animal Development (M.L. DePamphilis). Transcriptional Regulation During Early Drosophila Development (K. Prakash, J. Topol, C.R. Dearolf, and C.S. Parker). Translational Regulation of Maternal Messenger RNA (L.D. Smith). Gut Esterase Expression in the Nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans (J.D. McGhee). 内容説明

Advances in Developmental Biochemistry was launched as a series by JAI Press in 1992 with the appearance of Volume 1. This series is inextricably linked to the companion series, Advances in Developmental Biology, that was launched at the same time. As stated in the Preface to Volume 1: "Together the two series will provide annual reviews of research topics in developmental biology/biochemistry, written from the perspectives of leading investigators in these fields. It is intended that each review draw heavily from the author's own research contributions and perspective. Thus, the presentations are not necessarily encyclopedic in coverage, nor do they necessarily reflect all opposing views of the subject." Volume 2 of the series follows these same guidelines.

目次

List of Contributors. Preface (P.M. Wassarman). Drosophila Homeobox Genes (S. Dessain and W. McGinnis). Structural and Functional Aspects of Mammalian Hox Genes (P. Dolle and D. Duboule). The Developmental Control Genes in Myogenesis of Vertebrates (H.H. Arnold and T. Braun). Mammalian Fertilization: Sperm Receptor Genes and Glycoproteins (P.M. Wassarman). The Fertilization Calcium Signal and How it is Triggered (M. Whitaker and K. Swann). Index.

内容説明

Volume 3 of Advances in Developmental Biology and Biochemistry consists of five chapters that review specific aspects of mammalian and fly development. In Chapter 1, D. Chapman and D. Wolgemuth discuss the role of protein kinases, especially tyrosine-and serine/threonine kinases, in regulating cell cycle events during mammalian gametogenesis. IN Chapter 2, M. Lundell and J. Hirsh discuss the regulation of the DOPA decarboxylase gene during Drosophila development. DO PA decarboxylase is a key enzyme in biogenic amine biosynthesis and its expression is subject to both transcriptional and post-transcriptional regulation. In Chapter 3, S. Potter discusses the role of homeobox genes as master switches determining the developmental destinies of groups of cells during murine development. In Chapter 4, G. Cooper discusses the expression and function of the c-mos proto-oncogene in mammalian germ cells where it plays a central role in regulating the meiotic cell cycle. In Chapter 5, F. Beermann, R. Ganss, and G. Schutz discuss the regulation of pigmentation during mammalian development, with emphasis on the production of melanin in mouse melanocytes.

Volume 4 of Advances in Developmental Biology and Biochemistry consists of five chapters that review specific aspects of sea urchin, fly, and mammalian development. In Chapter 1, A. Bejsovec and M. Peifer discuss the nature and role of the wingless/Wnt-1 signaling pathway in Drosophila, as well as in amphibia and mammals. In Chapter 2, C. Ettensohn and colleagues discuss cell interactions, cell fate specification, and morphogenesis in sea urchin embryos. In Chapter 3, E. Kubli discusses the nature and role of a Drosophila sex-peptide that serves as a pheromone involved in reproduction. In Chapter 4, T. Gridley discusses the expression and functions of several vertebrate homologs of the neurogenic genes of Drosophila. In Chapter 5, J. Pollard and R. Stanley discuss the pleiotropic roles for colony stimulating factor-1 in development as defined by the mouse mutation osteopetrotic.
