Description

Studies of chromatin structure and function peaked in the late 1970s, but attracted less attention in the 1980s as more people switched to studying specific promoters, enhancers and transcription factors and their role in regulating gene expression. Their results have come full circle and have focused increasing attention on regulation at the level of chromatin structure. Using the tools of molecular biology, genetics and biochemistry, this study charts the progress that has been made in defining chromatin structure and identifying potential mechanisms for regulation.

Table of Contents

1: Elements of chromatin structure: histones, nucleosomes, fibers. 2: DNA structure: implications for chromatin structure and function. 3: Replication and assembly. 4: Promoter potentiation and activation: chromatin structure and transcriptional induction of heat shock genes. 5: Initiation of expression: remodelling genes. 6: Transcription on chromatin templates. 7: Chromatin structure and epigenetic regulation in yeast. 8: Epigenetic regulation in Drosophila: a conspiracy of silence. 9: Boundaries and domains. 10: Epigenetic regulation in mammals
