内容説明

Archives in a sense belong to us all. They are our collective memory, unique and irreplaceable, held in trust from generation to generation. The first essential element in the strategy for their care and survival is a soundly-designed repository. The period since the first publication of British Standard 5454 "Recommendations for storage and exhibition of archival documents" in 1977 contrary to some expectations in a difficult economic climate, has proved to be a golden age in the development of the United Kingdom's publicly-funded archive buildings. The general improvement in standards of care for our archives is undeniable, although not yet universal. This study is therefore primarily a celebration of progress. But it also draws on the Commission's long experience of visiting and inspecting record repositories in order to assess problems encountered along the way. Thirty illustrated case studies of individual buildings are included.
