内容説明

This volume covers the year 1993, a period marked by growing polarization in the conflict between radical Islamist movements and the region's states, as well as by a dramatic breakthrough in the Arab-Israeli conflict. Radical groups, supported by Islamist governments in Iran and Sudan, increased their terrorist attacks on Egyptian, Algerian, and Saudi Arabian governments and violently opposed the peace process in Israel and the occupied territories. Arab states responded with increased repression, producing tension and instability.A more positive development was the historic signing by Israel and the PLO of a formal Declaration of Principles, which prompted the conclusion of an Israeli-Jordanian agenda for peace that would lead to a treaty in 1994. It also created opportunities for an enhanced U.S. role in the peace process, especially in promoting an Israeli-Syrian treaty, which nonetheless went unsigned in 1993.

内容説明

This is the eighteenth volume in a series that provides a continuing up-to-date reference work recording the rapidly changing events in an exceptionally complex part of the world. The volume includes for the first time separate country surveys of the North African states of Algeria, Morocco, and Tunisia. On the whole, 1994 was characterized by continuity rather than major changes, with tension between governments and religious or ethnic opposition groups still dominating the political climate, most notably in Algeria, Egypt, and Iraq. As before, it was in the Arab-Israeli arena that the most important changes took place. The 1993 Declaration of Principles signed by Israel and the PLO, and their May 1994 implementation agreement, paved the way for the Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty, signed in October 1994, and prompted a process of political and economic dialogue between Israel and a number of formerly hostile Arab states. The Israeli-PLO agreements also gave birth to the autonomous Palestinian Authority in the Gaza Strip and Jericho, widely viewed as a major step toward a possible settlement of their historic conflict. }This is the eighteenth volume in a series that provides a continuing up-to-date reference work recording the rapidly changing events in an exceptionally complex part of the world. 内容説明

The Middle East Contemporary Survey is the authoritative reference work on contemporary Middle Eastern affairs. Volume 20, which covers the region through 1996, is the latest in a series of annual surveys which provide a continuing record and analysis of the rapidly changing events in this complex area of the world. Some of the events that are analyzed include the future of the Arab-Israeli peace process; the change of government in Israel; the ascent of an Islamist-led coalition coalition government in Turkey (traditionally the most secular of all Middle Eastern Muslim countries); the growing discontent with the established Islamic order in Iran; and the continuing violent confrontation between the regime and the Islamist opposition in Algeria.
