Description and Table of Contents

Description

This volume is concerned with supporting adult literacy worldwide by focusing on the local content. General papers explore what is meant by local literacies and the significance of language issues. Case studies from South Africa, Malta, The Solomon Islands, India and Uganda provide local examples of how literacy is related to language choice and language planning, and the role of international agencies. The authors of the twelve papers in this volume include well-known academics, practitioners and literacy specialists from many countries of the world. They all participated in the seminar 'Sustaining Local Literacies' held at the University of Reading in March 1993, which was organised by 'Education for Development'.
