Description and Table of Contents
Description
This text provides a general picture of the Roman province of Britain during the period from AD 43 until the fifth century. This edition has been revised in the light of recent archaeological research. A new introductory chapter looks at Britain before the first Roman invasion. An overview of the campaigns that followed the invasion and the subsequent military subjugation and regional organization is provided. The Roman army had an enormous impact on the early development of cities. The structure and function of urban centres and rural settlements are examined, along with the influence and expanding role of commerce. Religious cults, their monuments and artistic expression are explored in relation to the provincial social order.
