Description and Table of Contents

Description

With rewritten chapters using the most recent data available, this new edition also contains two new chapters on rural Australia and higher education. It is a comprehensive introduction to the study of Australian society. The introductory chapter has been expanded for the beginner reader. The book is divided into three sections. In the first, the major structural divisions of society are considered; in the second, socially-patterned behaviours which follow from these divisions are described; and in the third, several important current issues and concerns are dealt with. While the book is not concerned specifically with social problems, it focuses upon those who are disadvantaged in the present structure, the extent of and reasons for disadvantages, and various actions by government and others who might reduce or eliminate these disadvantages.
