内容説明

Exploration of differences between women: good women who were absorbed into society, and those whose social role condemned them to its fringes. These studies cross the boundaries of literary studies, history and art history to discuss the ways that women were integrated into medieval society. All share a common concern with the ways in which women, in their various roles, were represented in the material under investigation. All are concerned to address the conventions that governed the perception of these social roles as well as the lives of the women themselves, in representations as diverse asthe portrayal of maiden warriors in Old Norse literature and the requirement for women's voices in 13th-century Italian lyrics. Contributors: BARBARA A. HANAWALT, ANN J. KETTLE, JAMES A. BRUNDAGE, LAURINDA S. DIXON, CAROL J. CLOVER, CHRISTOPHER KLEINHENZ, ROBERT R. EDWARDS
