The India-Pakistan "line of control" in Kashmir is one of the most heavily militarized areas of Asia, with both countries pouring enormous resources into strengthening their respective positions in a barren, glacial wilderness. How this situation came about and how it is likely to be resolved is the theme of this book. Professor Wirsing describes the wars that stalemated in Kashmir and the dangerous incidents that have occurred since establishment of the 1972 boundaries. With the Indian government under increasing pressure from separatists and radicals, the Pakistan government's instability, and the nuclear capacity of both sides, the Kashmir issue has serious political implications for the future.
