Description

Modern governments increasingly compete against each other to enhance the competitiveness of national firms and the efficiency of national markets, while also seeking to attract desirable forms of direct foreign investment. Policymakers are consequently required to learn more about the activities of firms, while government policy mixes demand more attention from corporate managements.Competitive and Cooperative Macromanagement examines macromanagement issues that are challenging governments and firms in the major industrialized democracies. This major new volume features a series of essays dealing with the activities of firms whose international operations affect economic structures, growth and employment in a number of countries. Subsequent papers examine the policies of governments in the larger industrialized democracies as they respond to the challenges of domestic political competition and the pressures of international competition at both policy and business levels. Cooperative solutions are advocated for governments seeking to manage their structural interdependencies while coping with external pressures and internal rivalries. Gavin Boyd has brought together a group of scholars who examine both the activities of firms and the policies of governments, traditionally addressed separately, in order to focus attention on the larger issues of corporate strategy and economic policy.
