内容説明

This is widely acknowledged as being one of the most important and informative books ever to appear on the subject of horology. The present work by NAG Press is a facsimile, produced by the original printers of the original publication. Every attempt has been made by printers and publishers alike to achieve the same luxury quality, despite the absence of the colour originals of over sixty years ago. For accurate factual information, Baillies' work is as fresh today as it was when first written. A few more facts have come to light, but his research was the source of many other authors' books; thus Watches can be regarded as a root source. This book contains information about early watches which is still not available elsewhere. It is not exclusively about the earliest watches, however; it is a proper history covering nearly four centuries with emphasis on original developments. The illustrations fall into three groups. Watch cases, dials and movements are reproduced in 189 black-and-white photographs, plus thirty-five in full colour - all of enamels. These groups are supplemented by eighty-two line drawings of mechanisms, from balances and escapements to striking work and chronographs. G.H. Baillie's writing style was unambiguous and vivid. If he felt that the reader might not have enough background in one aspect of the subject, he would take the trouble to deal with it in some detail. The engine-turning used on many cases and dials is an example; he actually turned some examples to a larger scale (and illustrated them) to show how the patterns were derived.
