Description and Table of Contents
Description
Transport accounts directly for approximately 20% of carbon dioxide emissions in the UK. The UK government has signed the Climate Change Convention which calls for measures to reduce carbon dioxide to 1990 levels by 2000. This study examines the contribution that land-use planning could make through, for example, influencing densities, urban structure and facilities at the neighbourhood level, with respect to reducing overall travel demand and to encouraging the use of more emissions-efficient modes of travel. A range of research techniques are utilized including case studies and statistical analyses; simulations using existing models; a literature review; and empirical work at the neighbourhood level.
