Description

The split between manual and non-manual workers is one of the most theorized divisions of labour in capitalist society. Distinctions based on employment conditions or work relations all too often emphasize categorical differences, while closer attention to the economic, technological and managerial pressures faced by white-collar workers discussed here uncovers a common pool of both shared and distinct working experiences. The theoretical basis of this volume considers that the processes of class relations, and not the positions they generate, should be the starting point for critical debate on white-collar workers. But, rather than add yet more layers of theory, this collection chiefly presents theoretically informed case studies of different sections of non-manual workers, especially higher groups not normally studied through labour-process writing, such as academics, doctors and journalists. Chris Smith is the author of "Technical Workers" and co-author of "White-Collar Workers", "Trade Unions and Class" and "Reshaping Work: The Cadbury Experience". David Knights is the author of "Job Redesign", "Gender and the Labour Process and "Managing the Labour Process". Hugh Willmott is the editor of "Job Redesign" (with David Knights and D. Collison), "Gender and the Labour Process" and "Managing the Labour Process" (both with David Knights).
