Description
At the end of the 20th century, Greece stands poised between tradition and modernity, with some institutions, such as the Orthodox church, rooted in the past and others, such as the European Union, tugging toward the future. Greece is striving to modernize its economy and its culture as it confronts the aftermath of the Cold War, especially the break up of Yugoslavia, with its possible threat to Greek Macedonia, and the demands of European Union membership. But is Greek society too deeply focused on internal concerns and too embedded in traditional ways to meet these challenges? The authors of this book address these questions in chapters that cover Greece's politics, the impact of the church on political culture, foreign policy, the economy, labour unions, crime, culture, the media, and feminism and the status of women.
