内容説明

Recent years have seen remarkable advances in neurosurgery, and these advances have increasingly illuminated the importance of the role of the venous system. Until now, the main focus of neurosurgery has been directed to arteries such as those feeding tumors, but it is now clear that some lesions that had been considered contusional hemorrhage caused by surgical manipulation were in fact hemorrhagic infarctions resulting from impaired venous circulation. In addition, the concept of venous hypertension has emerged as a mechanism of neurological impairment in patients with arteriovenous malformations in the brain or spinal cord. Great strides have also been made in neuroradiological diagnosis with the introduction of magnetic resonance imaging. For example, the exact location of tumors and the degree of invasion of sinuses can now be determined prior to surgery. Thus, new operative techniques are being developed that benefit from such detailed information. This book presents material from a wide range of fields, including embryology, anatomy, pathophysiology, neuroradiology, diagnosis, and treatment. It is hoped that the reviews of pioneering work on the intracranial venous system presented here will prove invaluable for further development of new operative techniques.
