This guide is designed to enable readers to easily implement rigid and contact endoscopy techniques with equipment that is currently available in their own clinical setting. The nuances of the techniques are fully explained through actual clinical case studies. These case studies illustrate the benefits of these techniques in the assessment of benign, pre-malignant and malignant laryngeal conditions. After an introductory section on instrumentation and devices, the authors present their approach to rigid endoscopy microlaryngeal surgery (REMS) of the larynx in a series of actual clinical cases, with particular focus on their illuminating use of angled telescopes. Current endoscopic techniques allow observation of only the superior surface of the vocal cord; rigid endoscopy, however, employs the use of different optical angles that permit the visualization of the superior and inferior surfaces, as well as free border of the entire vocal cord, the anterior commissure, the ventricle and the subglottis - areas that were once difficult or even impossible to visualize before. One section of the book explores how this highly-detailed multiperspective evaluation can aid in the diagnosis and assessment of such conditions as: vocal cord polyps, nodules and cysts; Reinke's edema; chronic laryngitis; contact granuloma; papilloma; stenosis; pre-malignant lesions; and malignant tumours. Another section of clinical cases demonstrates the application of contact endoscopy and presents colour images of the larynx obtained with this technique.
