During the Holocaust period, the countries of the British Empire were viewed as safe havens for the persecuted Jews of Europe. As this collection of essays shows, however, they proved to be false havens. For the first time, the response of these countries of the British Empire to the Jewish refugee crisis of the 1930s and 1940s is addressed.
