Research into palaeoecological events since the last deglaciation has progressed significantly in the last 15 years. Such research involves multidisciplinary stratigraphical studies of lake and mire deposits, using a variety of field study sites. A synthesis of the work carried out in Europe is presented in this text, dealing with both biotic and physical environmental changes, including climate, hydrology, vegetation, human impact and soils. Regional syntheses are based on approximately 50 key sites, covering around 100 different regions.
