The book covers a wide range of issues ranging from racism to women's dress of the period, from professional football to morale in the Blitz, written by academics from many different areas of social and cultural study. It also includes a substantial autobiographical section with essays by Alan Silitoe, Stephen Knight and Peter Davidson, providing an informed personal slant to this archaeology of Britain's past.
