Description

The Management of Labour provides a detailed account of changes in the policies and practices of Australian employers in the twentieth century. In contrast to the plethora of overseas-inspired managements texts, this book highlights the rich and varied history of Australian employers and the various ways and means by which they have attempted to maximise their control over labour costs and work effort. Particular emphasis is placed on developments in employer practice during the last twenty years and the extent to which such contemporary changes have followed earlier patterns of labour management. Such a history not only provides a gauge by which to assess the impact of current reforms, but also highlights the dangers of repeating the failures of the past. The book provides a valuable source for anyone interested in understanding contemporary changes in Australian industrial relations and employer practice.
