Description

This work is concerned with molecular mechanisms participating in the pathogenesis of the spondyloarthropathies. Characterization of the molecular structure and function of HLA class I (including B27 and class II antigens), identification of bacterial and viral components by polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridization techniques in the synovial fluid and membrane, characterization of the molecular mimicry existent between HLA-B27 and a variety of infectious organisms, development of HLA-B27 transgenic animal expressing inflammatory articular involvement reminiscent of the spondyloarthropathies, and further elucidation of the role of growth factors and cytokines in the triggering of this group of disorders are fully discussed.
