内容説明

Founded in 1965 by Meinhard von Gerkan and Volkwin Marg, with workers in its employment in Hamburg, Berlin, Aachen, Braunschweig and Leipzig, von Gerkan, Marg and Partners is a successful architecture practice in Germany. Hamburg's air terminal, the concert hall in Lubeck, the industrial exhibition halls in Leipzig, the renovation of the Stuttgart train station, the harbour terminal in Yokohama and the Helsinki train station are a few of their 137 projects documented here. Predominant in all these projects is the emphasis von Gerkan, Marg and Partners place on the aesthetics of the large form, the connection between interior and exterior, the ordering of large-volumed structures and the harmony of proportions. The Lehrter railway station in Berlin, by far Germany's largest station project, is an exemplary case in point: imposingly dimensioned, it obeys design mandates calling for clarity of arrangement, expansiveness, maximal utilization of natural lighting, and sleek functionalism. In his foreword, Dietmar Steiner fixes the importance of these architects within the context of contemporary architecture. A catalogue of works in the appendix contains a full listing of projects designed since 1965.
