Description and Table of Contents
Description
The way fluoride is used today has profoundly affected dentistry and has led to extensive changes in the curricula of dental schools. In spite of extensive research, some aspects of fluoride's action on dental tissues are not yet fully understood. However, research continues and new practical delivery methods are being developed. The text is presented in four sections. The first section covers the occurrence and distribution of fluoride in the environment, including chemical analysis used to determine fluoride concentrations. The second section presents physiologic and toxicologic aspects of fluoride with emphasis on its effect on humans. The third section focuses on the nature of dental caries and the effect of fluoride in the oral environment. To complete the picture, the fourth section covers the major clinical and public health uses of fluoride.
