Description and Table of Contents

Description

Each book in Oxfam's "Country Profiles" series describes the social, political, historical, environmental and economic context of Oxfam's work in one particular country. The books focus on the real lives of ordinary people and the major development issues that face them, and are illustrated with photographs, maps and diagrams. The people of Bangladesh show immense resilience and courage in facing natural disasters, and great determination in their struggle to build a better society. The problems they face do not only result from the difficult climactic conditions: some are a legacy of colonial exploitation, others a consequence of a society structured to benefit a small elite at the expense of the majority. This new edition has been revised and sections have been added on recent political changes, the Flood Control Plan, the expansion of the garment industry, and the rise of religious fundamentalism and ethnic tension.
