Description

The book provides information about both historical reality and legend. The influence of the ancient Greek and Roman cultures pervades our lives and an informed appreciation of the achievements of the ancient world leads to a better understanding of our own culture. The book is intended chiefly to elucidate the Greek and Roman writers, and to the characters and subjects dealt with in their works. In addition, a large number of shorter articles not included within those limits have been added as it was not considered expedient to omit any important name connected with antiquity. The book includes comprehensive articles on Mythology, Art and Folklore. Geographical background is provided by the inclusion of numerous place names together with an explanation of their significance. The book thus covers almost every aspect of classical study in fascinating detail. This three-volume work is illustrated in halftone and line with numerous plans and maps in addition to photographs to highlight the important articles. The book is thus a reference work of great detail and topicality, accessible to the general reader, as well as to the scholar and academic.
