Description
To mark the year of the Family in 1994, the author takes the reader on a journey to the world of the single mother. In seven countries, she lives besides one woman, learning about her work and her family, her loves and her fears. In China, she stays with Hua, a factory worker, divorced for giving birth to a daughter; in Brazil, we meet Rosa supporting her son; in Scotland, it's Meggie, an incest survivor battling to keep her three children. She also visits Uganda, Australia, India and the Gaza Strip to create seven remarkable portraits of the women at the centre of an important social unit: families without fathers which now comprise one quarter of all households in the world. By the author of "Women: A World Report".
