Up to one in 100 people are likely to suffer from schizophrenia at some point in their lifetime and about #1 billion a year is spent on services for them. The Committee was asked by the UK Health Ministers to advise on standards of their clinical care. Mental health services were assessed in 11 NHS Districts and Boards against a study protocol of 156 questions based on current standards of professional good practice. Visiting teams found widely varying achievement of these standards although examples of good practice are identified throughout the study. Published with the report is the Government's Response to the Committee's recommendations.
