This biography of the strangely private and unknown man is also a history of social and literary France in the late-19th century, and of the political and intellectual world through which Zola travelled. The book covers his relationships with Cezanne, Flaubert and Manet, places the great novels in the cultural context from which they sprang, and considers Zola's impact on the Dreyfus Affair with his "J'accuse".
