内容説明
This is a concise guide to the assessment of potential endocrine problems in children. It provides the information necessary to carry out a preliminary examination and determine the most appropriate cause of treatment. The text includes information on procedures which would be employed in a more detailed investigation enabling the doctor to advise the patient's family on the course of subsequent treatment. In providing a reference for the sub-specialist, this book utilizes a problem-oriented approach, whereby each of the classic syndromes is described as a case presentation. It has been designed for practising paediatricians in non-specialist centres which require easy access to brief written and pictorial information regarding the assessment of a potential endocrine disorder. The work begins with a number of key points to be observed in carrying out a clinical examination of a child with a suspected endocrine disorder; history-taking, measurement of height, weight, skin fold thickness, laboratory tests and diagnostic imaging such as MRI and ultrasonography.
Accompanying clinical photographs illustrate the physical signs which characterize endocrine disorders and some 50 growth charts illustrate the characteristic growth patterns. An introductory section describes the pathophysiology of the condition and the clinical manifestations of changes taking place enabling the clinician to interpret the signs correctly and make an accurate diagnosis.
