This text emphasizes the applicability of current anthropological research to understanding and improving present day human conditions. Selections from the four subfields of anthropology are included to show students that anthropology is about real people studying real solutions to real problems. Amongst the articles are: "Curse and a Blessing of the Ghetto" which looks at tay-Sachs, a contemporary health problem, and "A Reasonable Sleep" in which an anthropologist examines the phenomenon of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
