内容説明
This study examines the working-class cafe and what it reveals about urban life in 19th-century France. It argues that cafe life was the product not just of a small elite of intellectuals and artists, but was also formed by a diverse and changing working population. Cafe life is analyzed in relation to work, family life, leisure, gender roles, and political activity, and the author offers a reinterpretation of the social history of the Parisian working classes.
