Description
The modern political condition in Western countries has left their populations effectively emasculated and depoliticized, while "politics" occupies a site far removed from people's lives. From this starting point, this book presents a case for re-examination of the concept of citizenship. It claims that we have reached a point where conventional definitions are entirely emptied of meaning, and it offers a twist to the notion of alienation in a political sense. Moving beyond Amitai Etzioni's ideas, the book proposes new ways of rethinking citizenship in the community that might begin to have meaning for the world at large.
Table of Contents
- Myths, mirrors and origins
- the looking glass culture
- the recovery of the political and the project of the world
- between the public and the private
- beyond agonism and representation
- rethinking citizenship.
